Antiques, Art & History: Maysville’s Cultural Treasures

There’s a timeless quality to Maysville, Kentucky — a place where every brick and storefront tells a story. Just steps from Moon River Bed & Breakfast, this river town has built a reputation as a haven for history lovers, art enthusiasts, and antique collectors alike. Here, the past isn’t hidden in museums; it lives on through local craftsmanship, heritage, and community pride.

The Cox Building,

Start your cultural journey on Market Street, the heart of Maysville’s historic district. Its restored 19th-century buildings now house antique shops, boutiques, and galleries that showcase Kentucky’s creative side. From vintage furniture and collectibles to handcrafted pottery and artwork, there’s something for every eye and budget.

One must-visit stop is The Cox Building, an architectural gem that now serves as a community arts hub. It regularly hosts exhibitions, performances, and workshops celebrating local artists. Just a short walk away, the Russell Theatre, a beautifully preserved 1930s movie palace, adds a touch of nostalgia to the town’s cultural scene — and sometimes even screens classic films or live shows.

Art isn’t the only treasure you’ll find in Maysville. The Kentucky Gateway Museum Center, with its remarkable miniatures collection and historical exhibits, brings the region’s story to life. Meanwhile, antique hunters will love exploring Merchant’s Row and smaller family-run shops dotted around town, each filled with unique finds that reflect the charm of the Ohio River Valley.

After a day of browsing and exploring, return to Moon River B&B, where history continues through the 1888 Cox Row Houses themselves. Enjoy a peaceful evening near the river, surrounded by the same artistic spirit that defines Maysville — where the old and new coexist in perfect harmony.

My sister and I stayed at Moon River while we toured the historical sites of the area which are plentiful. Anyone interested in the history of this great nation should visit Maysville and the surrounding villages. Our room was spacious, our bed very comfortable, our host, Denny, Gave us good information and was very pleasant to talk to. Moon River is just a block from everything. You could not have a better location. We hope to return someday.
