Summary
The Newdigate-Reed House is a rare survivor from Kentucky’s early settlement days, offering a glimpse into the lives of 19th-century pioneers. Built of hand-hewn logs and stone around the early 1800s, the home stands just west of Maysville and remains one of Mason County’s oldest structures. Its simple, durable design showcases the craftsmanship and resilience of frontier families who helped shape the Ohio River Valley.
The house is named for two prominent local families — the Newdigates, who constructed it, and the Reeds, whose descendant Stanley Forman Reed went on to serve as a Justice on the United States Supreme Court. Although privately owned, it’s a fascinating landmark to view from the roadside, especially for guests interested in early Kentucky architecture and history. From Moon River Bed & Breakfast, it’s an easy drive through peaceful countryside dotted with farms and heritage sites.
Location
Nestled in a row of historic homes right in the heart of downtown, it is within walking distance of all the best restaurants and destinations. The owner, Denny, is very personable and eager to lend a hand or assist with questions. - Google Reviews
